How To Avoid Dry Burnt Cotton Hit When Vaping a ECIG

avoid dry hit on vape pen

We all are aware that vaping is 95% safer than smoking as there are many researchers that have carried out tests to verify this statement. Vaping is far more flavourful, compared to smoking, as you have a wide range of flavors to select, other than boring old cancer-causing tobacco. From tasty fruits to bubblegum, you will enjoy vaping all day long. If you want the best possible flavor from your e-cig vape pen, the last thing you want to experience is a dry hit. If you are wondering what a dry hit is, it is basically a burnt kind of cotton taste when vaping on your device. It is unpleasant and will taste like crap. If you have been vaping for a while, you will have experienced this at some point. We all have.

Once you get a dry hit on your e-cig coil, you will need to change it as the taste can't be removed. The burnt dry hit taste you are getting is created from burnt parts of the cotton that soaks up the e-liquid. Unless this is replaced, you will not able to get rid of the dry hit. Even cleaning the coil won't help, you might get rid of it for a while but it will come back after a few pulls. Once the cotton has turned bad, the taste will forever be changed. So, it’s best to change the coil with a brand new one and start fresh.

Are dry hits on your vape pen dangerous to your health? Not really, I mean you will be inhaling some sort of toxic fumes, but it can't be bad as all the 4000 chemicals going into your body with smoking a regular cigarette. A few dry hits here and there won't do to harm, so you have nothing to worry about. But if they can be avoided why not eh?

If you are wondering how to avoid dry hits when vaping, follow out top tips:

1) Prime your coils. When your coil is brand new from the box the cotton is fresh and not soaked up with any kind of e-liquid. If you have to use your new coil straight away, it will provide an insufficient duration for the cotton to get soaked up evenly. To ensure that your brand new vape coil is fully primed, pour a few drops of e-liquid directly into the top coil head and the side holes. Then fill up the tank up to the highest level, remember not to overfill. Close the bottom air holes and suck into the mouthpiece five times. While doing so, it will force the e-liquid to circulate inside the coil head. Leave your tank sitting for 10 minutes before use. This procedure is what all vape shops use when replacing coils in vape tanks for their customers. Something I learned over the years of helping at the vape shop.

2) Vape at the recommended wattage. Every coil has been tested from the factory what power handling it is capable off. There is usually a max wattage and the recommended wattage, this is commonly seen on SMOK branded tanks, which I think right now are the best value for money. The max is basically pushing it to its limits, usually burning it out quicker. However, the recommended wattage is usually best for flavor and lifespan. Check with the manufacturer to see what they have rated the coil, stay within the limits and you should be fine.

3) Don't vape while there is no e-juice left in the tank. This can become a problem with the 2ML new tank capacity that is put in place by the EU vape regulations. The tank is limited to storing lots of juice, this can become an issue for vape tanks that consume tons of e-juice such as experienced with the TFV12 tank. With five hits on high power, before you know it you will be running low in e-juice. The best way to overcome this is to always carry a small 10ml bottle in your pocket, so you can quickly fill up when you need to. Running a tank with very low e-liquid left inside it is very risky and if you are not careful you can risk burning out coil out.

4) (Only for RDA/RDTA or any other rebuildable tank. Having this kind of vape tank provides you with the opportunity to obtain a custom vaping experience. You can make your own coils. If you are getting a dry hit from your rebuildable, you might need to rewick the cotton. The coils are good for around 2-3 months, it’s the cotton that needs changing. Simply remove the old cotton, cut a small strip of fresh new Japanese cotton and slide it through the centre of the coil. Make sure the ends are nice and fluffy to ensure e-liquid gets easily soaked into it.

I have learned this over the years of vaping. I hope these tips have helped you avoid dry hits when vaping, as I know they are unpleasant. Please like and share.

  1. If you are not getting the same flavour as you did when vaping at first, then it might be time to get a new set of coils. Coils on average last around 1 week. You can get genuine replacements from savoryvapes.com, they have a variety for all makes of vape tanks.
